Value Cupcakes & Positive/Negative Space designs

posted Jan 25, 2018, 6:48 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Third grade has really been moving along nicely over the past two months in the art room. We have been utilizing technology to learn about artist Wayne Thiebaud and his use of VALUE in his dessert artwork. Third graders practiced showing value in their art by designing their own cupcakes. They are currently hanging up in the hallways! We are now working on the element of art SPACE, specifically positive and negative. Each third grader designed a tracer that is special to them and created a composition that shows overlapping and cropping (techniques we learned last year!). Henna Art

posted Oct 4, 2017, 10:41 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Third graders have started the school year by traveling across the world to learn about the art of India! We have been looking closely at Henna and how they use all different types of LINES to create beautiful designs for festivals and celebrations. We watched a time lapse video of Henna art being applied to a hand and students pointed out all the LINE styles they observed. We have been working hard to design our own Henna on paper. Stay up to date with pictures of their progress on Instagram @summitartists

Summer time

Third graders rocked the end of the school year with some awesome Pop Art inspired Emojis. It was our final lesson of the school year and it was an enjoyable lesson for everyone. Some even designed new Emojis! As the school year comes to a close all third graders will be coming home with full art portfolios of the great lessons we covered. We set the bar high this year and tried a lot of new art techniques. Make sure to check out every piece of artwork that comes home! :)

Djembe Drums

Music and art have so many valuable connections that we can teach our students! What better way to share this connection that through an African Art unit studying Djembe drums. Students will learn about how they are made, what makes them unique, and then get a chance to build their own Djembe drum from plaster! We are very excited to work in a 3-D form and get messy!

Third graders are turning the corner into some higher level thinking in the art room and some more challenging art explorations! We are starting to think more like fourth graders and are ready for the challenge. Stay tuned for some great lessons coming up. And don't forget to follow picture updates on Instagram @summitartists

Get to know some Artists

posted Feb 23, 2017, 7:42 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Third graders have been learning about a lot of different artists since the start of the school year. Using artists styles and techniques to create our own unique pieces has been lots of fun and our artwork has been successful! The newest artist we are looking at is Keith Haring, which many students recognize from pop culture references on clothing articles! His unique style helps us focus on Color, Movement Lines, Contour Lines, and Composition. Stay tuned for pictures on Instagram @summitartists

Third graders will begin to look at the artwork of Wayne Theibaud next week and learn about a new element of art: VALUE! They will look closely at his artwork and notice his strong use of light to make images look 3-D on paper.
Third graders will begin exploring with the material of oil pastels and create their own Wayne Theibaud inspired artwork to demonstrate their understanding of Value.
