Pop Art Portraits

posted Mar 15, 2018, 10:43 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders are also starting a pop art unit and looking at artist Roy Lichtenstein! We are studying his unique comic like style and the use of dots to fill the space. We are also practicing the proportions of the face and creating pop art style portraits! Stay tuned on Instagram for progress pictures.

Van Gogh Sunflowers

posted Jan 25, 2018, 6:45 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders are already wishing and hoping for warmer weather here in the art room! To satisfy our want for Spring time we decided to tackle a Vincent Van Gogh inspired unit on SPACE and TEXTURE with a study of real sunflowers! Second graders designed a sunflower composition, painted each area with watercolor, and are currently using oil pastels to add a 'dash-like' texture to mimic Van Gogh brushstrokes. It requires a lot of focus and patience and we are doing an amazing job! Check out Instagram @summitartists for some sneak peeks.

LINE Landscapes

posted Oct 4, 2017, 5:22 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders are excited to be back in the art room and have been reviewing some of the many LINES they learned last year in first grade. We have started to talk about Landscapes and a very important type of line in nature, the HORIZON LINE! Second graders have been using all types of LINES to make intricate and exciting landscapes. Their LINES have movement and are really bringing the landscapes to life. We are even reviewing COLOR and using the groups WARM & COOL to fill our LINE landscapes. Stay tuned on Instagram @summitartists for picture updates.

Another great year

posted Jun 16, 2017, 9:55 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders will be coming home with their art portfolios since our school year is coming to an end. We had a great year in second grade and learned about a lot of new artists including Van Gogh (a fan favorite)! Students tried out many new art materials and built upon the foundational skills they mastered as first graders. We will be looking forward to what third grade holds for them! Enjoy the summer and keep making art.

POP ART: Emojis

posted May 4, 2017, 6:11 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders at Franklin have started to take a closer look at POP ART! The Franklin Fair was themed with Emojis so we carried that excitement right into the art room. Second graders have been designing their own unique Emoji faces focusing on shape, color, and feelings they want to portray. Stay tuned on our Instagram @summitartists for picture updates of their awesome designs.

African Landscape Silhouettes

posted Mar 29, 2017, 5:54 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

In second grade our African Art unit is centered around painting landscapes and understanding how bright background light can create what is called a silhouette. Students looked at African savannah sunsets and painted their own sunset. This week they will practice drawing animals and build their own landscape in a silhouette style with black paint. Stay tuned on Instagram for pictures! @summitartists

Second graders have recently been working on mastering skills we've covered since the start of the school year. We are currently working on a lesson that touches on Line, Color, Space, Pattern, and Repetition! WOW! Students learned to cut their own snowflakes and then used them to create a composition on large paper. For a sneak peek of what this looks like visit us on Instagram @summitartists

Growing as Artists

posted Dec 12, 2016, 11:50 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

Second graders have really been mastering skills they started learning last year in first grade as the school year has started. We've covered many Elements of Art including Line, Color, Value, and Space. As we head into Winter Break I encourage all second graders to continue to work on art at home and practice their skills!

Calling all 2nd graders!!!

posted Oct 20, 2015, 10:42 AM by Jaimie Woodruff   [ updated Oct 20, 2015, 10:42 AM ]

Every second grader is encouraged to collect and bring in an empty tissue box for art. Later in their year we will be exploring some 3-D artwork and will create some tissue box monsters. I already have a small collection of tissue boxes left over from last year, but will still need some more for this fun art unit to happen after the winter holidays are over.

If you send your child to school with empty tissue boxes please direct them to the art room! :)
