Pop Art: Andy Warhol

posted Mar 15, 2018, 10:41 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

First graders just finished up their culture unit, as we looked at the national bird of India...the peacock! They focused on blending and practicing their lines to create beautiful detailed feathers.

We have now started our Pop Art unit and we are getting to know the artist Andy Warhol. We are looking at the repetition of symbols and his use of bold print colors with printmaking. Stay tuned on Instagram for progress pictures and updates!

First graders are beginning to settle into the art room routines. They are creating, exploring, and having fun all while learning new skills! First graders have been practicing all types of different LINES over the past two weeks to create some really unqiue cows that have spots filled with LINES all over their bodies! We've even watched a couple videos on the Smart Board and learned a silly LINE song. Follow us on Instagram @summitartists for picture updates of their progress.

The school year is coming to a quick close and all first grade students will be coming home with their art portfolios! They are filled with the many lessons we covered throughout the school year. First graders are excited to showcase their pieces to you at home so please take the time to go through their artwork with them and let them tell you about what they learned this year. Enjoy the summer and keep creating! :)

African Elephants & Ndebele Patterns

posted Mar 29, 2017, 5:31 AM by Jaimie Woodruff

We have officially started our African Art unit and first graders are jumping right into African patterns present in the Ndebele Tribe! We've created large borders with line and shape to mimic these patterns with our own creative twist.

In the weeks to come we will study African Elephants, look at photographs, and then draw our own elephant to put onto our patterned borders! :)

First graders have been studying so many things since the school year started. We have covered Line, Color, Value, and Space! We've looked at artists such as Van Gogh, Todd Parr, and Romero Britto. As 2016 comes to an end and we head into Winter Break I hope that all first graders will produce some artwork at home to keep up their hard work.

First graders are finishing up their Crazy Cow Line artworks this week and preparing to learn about Value starting next week. Some of the objectives that first graders covered in their Line unit were: 1. We can name a variety of different types of line, 2. We can draw different types of lines to create patterns, and 3. We can use colors to make our patterns even more exciting!

To start the year off students in first grade have been learning about the famous types of line! We developed our fine motor skills by drawing different lines such as: zig-zag, loopy, straight, swirls, to name a few.
We are using our line knowledge to create Crazy Cows for our final artwork. Check out our instagram @summitartists for progress pictures and check back soon for pictures of some final creations.
